Experienced TEFL teacher and former director at Summer TEFL Jobs
The regular language schools that are open year round hire out additional buildings from universities and colleges in the summer in order to open additional classes. That means they are on the look out for extra teachers for this period. Also many English language summer school providers hold courses in London over the summer. Usually in more suburban areas outside the city centre. The best way to secure a position is to apply early on in the year.
Most of these positions are short term and paid by the hour. Teachers can expect to be paid £15-£20 per hour working at a language school in London, and teach roughly 20-25 hours per week. Summer schools in London often pay weekly, in the region of £300-£400 per week. Some teachers are offered extensions to their contract into September and beyond. If the teaching goes well and student numbers stay high language schools may offer teachers a long term contract based on a good performance in the summer.
